CJ Rain

While other kids get obsessed with Lego constructors, our amber-sounding CJRain, in the age of 11, had first attempts in composing…Back then it was an influence of modern eJey — Dance Machine.

At the same time was constantly listening to Station 2000 (at the moment — the best underground dance music radio station located in Moscow), in particular — DJ Fonar's show called «Atmosphere». That, in general, formed Rain's musical taste.

In 2002, musical software Fruity Loops becomes composer's best partner for quite awhile. It's a fun little program as simple as Super Mario 1, but you can learn how to jump in it very high and very fast. So he did.

2002-2003 — actively pursuing musical endeavors, listening to the «Station», putting his own tracks on www.realmusic.ru, studying and learning more about synthesis and production of sound, also about different genres and directions of electronic music culture. Especially attracted to progressive (Max Graham, John Digweed, Sasha, Solar stone, Art of trance etc).

2004 — collaborating with young producer in a field of IDM/ambient/experimental. Project didn't exist for too long, but motivated CJ to writing and expanding his taste to deeper musical styles. Became a fan of FSOL, later — Architect, Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Autechre, eDit. Gaining, as a 'forever student', more knowledge in theory of creating of electronic music.

2005 — creative pause, as we call it. Almost nothing appears under fingertips put on a keyboard. Still ears are busy listening to underground streams and a bit of progressive.

2006 — music never leaves us if we meant to make it: coming back to music production.

Questions:

1. Do you see sound? If yes, than in what? How do you imagine it to yourself? What is sound?

Yes. For me sound is circles on the water. Low frequencies create slow, long waves. High frequencies — are small, frequent vibrations of water. Water can be colored also, depending on the mood of the music. For example, deep ambient — is dark-blue water with slow drifting waves. Drum'n'bass could be bright-yellow fountain spring.

2. If you close your eyes for an instance and imagine the most beautiful place on Earth or in the Universe, what would that be?

I probably imagine myself on a cloud. Big, soft, white cloud. Birds are near, flying, and if you look back — you can see the sun, and if down — Earth, that seems so small…

3. What does your city mean to you and do you reflect it in sound?

My city is not more than a place I live at. Never tried to express it in music. Don't think that can say anything besides this.

4. What is the first kiss?

First kiss is when you're on the aloud with your lover
